Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa
Description
Although diplomatic ties between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of South Africa were terminated in January 1998, however after negotiations, it was decided that the two countries would set up liaison offices in the respective countries. Taiwan has the Taipei Liaison Office in the Republic of South Africa (Pretoria) and in Johannesburg as well as Cape Town respectively. South Africa also has the Liaison Office of South Africa in Taiwan. Both countries still keep close relations.
The Taipei Liaison Office in the RSA has the following divisions: Economic Division, Information Division, Cultural Division, and Service Coordination Division. These divisions serve to promote economic, trade, cultural, educational, scientific, financial, and other exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and South Africa. This office is currently represented by Representative Richard R.C. Shih.
The main function of this office is to issue visas, and to serve and protect the interests of ROC expatriates and Chinese-South Africans people in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State and Limpopo provinces.
