Title
Handmade Knives by R.K. Stevens
Description
A native Southern Oregonian, R.K. (Randy) Stevens was born in the Umpqua River Valley and at the age of 9, his family moved to the Rogue River Valley. Hunting and shooting played a big role in Randy's life from an early age, learning from his hero and father, former Oregon Large Bore Rifle Champion, Johnnie L. Stevens. By age 12, Randy's love of hunting and shooting prompted him to start hand-loading his own ammunition and to this day Randy loads all that he shoots.
The expense of his "hobbies" required that Randy go to work at age 13. At age 15, he got his first car which he promptly traded for an old Harley-Davidson "Flat Track" racer. Randy's dad soon made him sell it as he did not yet have a driver's license. The following year (having his license) Randy replaced it with another Harley-Davidson. Graduating from high school in 1965, Randy joined the Navy and served two tours of duty (1966-68) in Vietnam as a Corpsman. Returning home, he started motorcycle racing in 1969 and worked in the motorcycle business for several years. There is, of course, a Harley-Davidson in his garage today.
In 1975, Randy made his first "official knife" out of planer blade and deer antler. Between 1975-85 he made approximately 25-30 knives, which do not have a name on them. In 1985, Randy decided to get serious about making knives. As there are so many fine knife makers who specialize in fixed-blades as he does, Randy opted to do something different and resurrected a skill that he picked up in high school crafts class, "Lost Wax Casting". In the years between 1985-94 he produced approximately 200 knives. Around 50 had lost wax cast fittings, mainly in sterling silver. These knives were marked either R.K. Stevens, or Stevens. In 1990 while attending the Oregon Knife Show, Randy received a compliment on his knives from a "Famous" West Coast hand-maker. He also advised Randy on the business, saying "You make a fine knife, but don't expect to find a market in Oregon". Stubbornly, Randy started doing gun/knife shows only in Oregon and in 1994 quit his "real job" and started full-time hand-making.
