This is the time of year when we actually start heaving sighs of relief. Another great salmon & halibut fishing season! We work all year, from the end of the fishing season to the beginning of the next, preparing for the guests to arrive on the docks at the Rivers Inlet Sportsman's Club. When guests leave saying, 'I'll be counting the days until I get back here', we are filled with both pleasure and anxiety-will we continue to live up to the guests' expectations? If effort is an indication, we plan always to exceed expectations.
Often, we are asked, 'How do you spend your time in the off-season'. In 1984, Barbara did the cleaning, cooking, sales and marketing. Today, with a large staff, & the help of Simon & Tegan (Whistler office - 604 938 0505) and Cathy (Campbell River office - 250 923 2689) doing so much of the sales and marketing in the off season, Barbara has more time to attend to other business activities. Last winter, she designed and planned two new guest accommodation buildings to be built on one 70' x 50' float. We were relieved when these buildings were floated into Sportsman's Bay in time for the start of the season. Weather problems (including a tsunami warning) had left us afraid that there would be a delay. The eight cozy, cedar lined rooms with ensuites have been much admired and appreciated. We thank Chris Chateauvert and his crew (Sointula) for their craftsmanship, and John Salo for his careful and expert towing.
We spent quite a bit of time over the winter deciding what to do about the Yamaha pull-start four-stroke engines we bought in 2003. For ease of operation, we needed to attach an electric start. In the end, however, we decided that we would begin all over again with new electric start four stroke engines, and so we bought a whole new fleet. Our guests have been pleased with these new engines. Of course, these four stroke engines require extra maintenance work: batteries in the boats, engines need to be pulled up and oil needs to be changed etc. So, John Salo built us a large, new boat house with a great pulley attachment, a workshop and room to store extra engines.
