Richland County School District One, South Carolina’s fifth-largest school district, serves a diverse population of more than 25,000 students from urban, suburban and rural communities in the capital city of Columbia. Centrally located three hours from the beaches and the mountains of South Carolina, Richland One covers 482 square miles, operates 47 schools and employs 4,200 staff.
Since 1881, generations of Columbia families have entrusted the education of their children to the friendly, neighborhood schools of Richland One. The district’s innovative and challenging instructional programs, co-curricular activities and community partnerships are designed to give our students a competitive advantage. One of the state’s most progressive school districts, Richland One includes a high school for the arts, Montessori programs, International Baccalaureate programs and a college preparatory academy. Richland One is the only South Carolina school district that was identified in a 2002 nationwide survey of public and private school programs as being among the top 100 places to live in America for quality music education. The district also was one of the first in the nation to remove carbonated beverages and junk food from school vending machines accessible to students.
Richland One schools, students and staff are consistent award winners at the local, state and national levels. Richland One is home to Blue Ribbon, Palmetto’s Finest, Red Carpet and Palmetto Gold and Silver award-winning schools. Recent graduates have enrolled at some of the most outstanding colleges and universities in the nation. The Class of 2005 earned more than $38 million in scholarships and other financial assistance.
