RED BULL WORD CLASH

Description

Excerpted from the website description:

Red Bull Word Clash is an annual Street Poetry Competition that first launched in 2002 and since then it has grown, grown and grown! On Saturday February 11, 2006 twenty of the nation’s rawest politically charged poets stormed the stage at the historic Carolina Theatre in Greensboro NC for the fourth edition of Red Bull Word Clash. Taking on topics from politics and police brutality to religion and race, the poets incited the crowd of hundreds to get on their feet with their no-holds-barred performances. The heated three-round competition began with 20 poets performing an original piece live with no props, no music, and no notes of any kind. A panel of respected judges including Bruce George, co-founder of the original Def Poetry Jam cut the group down to ten. After a second explosive round it was down to five. In the third and final round, the five remaining poets brought their hardest hitting material to the stage– but it was 2005 reigning champion, Queen Sheba from Atlanta, GA who walked away with the coveted title for a second year in a row. Event host and founder Monte Smith kept the energy alive throughout the night with his words of revolution, while the revolution kept the crowd on their feet with beats and breaks.
