Description

Hy-P cylinders are a new class of actuators that operate using power from compressed air and can be regulated hydraulically, by a built-in self-contained means of control, pneumatically, or by a combination of both. Compared to predecessor technology, known as air-over-oil or pneumatic cylinders with hydraulic slaves, our cylinders have incompressible dampening. That allows very compact solid-state type designs with all hydraulic lines built into the unit. When properly connected, these units will never leak dampening fluid into the surrounding environment. Their action is free of creeping and chatter (typical of air cylinders) with instant stops occurring when air supply is cut off. It takes a standard line of compressed air with pressure currently ranging from 30 PSI to 300 PSI (potentially up to 4000 PSI) and standard off-the-shelf pneumatic fittings and valves to operate these cylinders (the same as utilized to operate conventional air cylinders). Some modifications are offered with built-in hydraulic dampening adjustment. It allows an extreme level of consistency in speed control and broadens the range of displacement velocity from the maximum predetermined by design to a virtual zero; also very consistent. Hy-P cylinders are recommended for retrofit in existing systems currently equipped with conventional air cylinders desiring better positional control, smoother displacement, and operational stability despite irregular loads or pressure variations.

Hy-P technology should be considered as an alternative to low-pressure hydraulics and in the future, medium-pressure and (possibly) high pressure hydraulics. It has a much better value-per-dollar spent than either of the two conventional technologies. Compared to hydraulics, these cylinders in systems are less expensive to put together, less expensive to maintain and operate, and are generally environmentally friendly.

Hy-P actuators are capable of operating continuously at temperatures ranging from -65ºF to +300ºF. Finite analysis suggests that we can design an actuator capable of operating continuously in temperatures up to +450ºF. Hy-P cylinders can also be built entirely with materials fully complying with FDA requirements.
