The rationalpark is an independent, non-profit and non-governmental association which provides an interdisciplinary platform for scholars in the fields of philosophy, cultural and social sciences. Besides the aim to make elaborated insights available to the general public the rationalpark perceives itself as a mediator between academic professionals and those engaged in the civilian sector with crucial issues concerning present-day multicultural societies. Hence, the rationalpark works through academic research as well as field-based analysis on relevant social and cultural phenomena., Band 1 der rationalpark series | plateaus ist erschienen. Das Fremde im Raum, Thomas Gimesi, Werner Hanselitsch (Hg.), Bernhard Josef Tilg, Friedrich Pöhl: Der mit "Donnerwetter, wir sprechen Deutsch! - Erinnerung an Franz Boas (1858-1942)" betitelte Beitrag betont die Tatsache, dass Boas, der (Mit)Begründer der Amerikanischen Anthropologie, bereits zu Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Fragen aufgeworfen hatte, welche den sogenannten "Cultural Turn" in der Anthropologie und die Transformation der Geistes- in die Kulturwissenschaften einleiten sollten. Boas entwickelte sowohl seine eigenen wissenschaftlichen als auch ethischen und philosophischen Standpunkte und Methoden, welche von den Ideen Humboldts, Kants und Cassirers beeinflusst wurden. Er gab essenzialistisches Kulturkonzept auf, nahm die Affinität des Rassismus und des Evolutionismus vorweg und lehnte den Begriff einer universalistischen kulturellen Evolution scharf ab - insbesondere wenn dieser Fortschritt auf der Idee der Rasse und in Folge einer Ablehnung der Individualität gegründet war.
