Commemorating awards and achievements with custom trophies and plaques
Wilkinson, who is 72 years old, says he got into engraving when he was 21, fresh out of the army and looking for work. A professional bowler, he averaged 216 and qualified to compete in the Rheingold Bowling Champion's television special for eleven consecutive weeks.
Wilkinson did his first engravings on bowling trophies, "which were very big back then," he says.
Wilkinson and his brother Harry opened a small shop in a bowling alley, catering to professional bowlers and leagues.
"We'd do big orders of trophies and plaques, along with the custom bowling balls. That's how we started," he says.
He soon discovered he had a knack for engraving and worked to develop his skill. Eventually, the two brothers opened Rab's Trophy World, expanding the shop's product line to keep up with changing times.
Today, the shop handles mostly custom plaques in color. "We do them for sports teams, lodges, all kinds of businesses, and for events and conferences," Wilkinson says. "People want to commemorate certain achievements or occasions, and plaques are good for that."
Rab's Trophy World handles everything from large batches of several hundred or even several thousand plaques to "the single order from a customer who walks in off the street and wants just one," says Wilkinson.
