DEERFIELD, Ill., Oct. 27, 2005 – Walgreens (NYSE, NASDAQ: WAG), the nation's largest drugstore chain, today celebrates a major milestone in its rapid expansion with the opening of its 5,000 store in Richmond.
Since opening Virginia's first Walgreens in Richmond in 1996, the company has grown to more than 50 stores in the state. The 5,000th store, located in the historic Carytown neighborhood, will be the city's 20th Walgreens. The mid-Atlantic is one of the company's fastest growing markets with more than 40 stores planned to open in Virginia and Maryland over the next few years, bringing more than 1,200 jobs to the region.
This store represents a significant landmark in Walgreens organic growth strategy. With a record 475 stores planned to open this fiscal year, the company is well on its way to reaching its goal of 7,000 stores by 2010.
