Part One The Cyberware and The Hardware

I see entire shelves of what we used to call Science Fiction now being devoted to FUTURITY writing. No longer Dreams or Imaginings but bold blueprints for probable futures, lined with products and details from this new time to come around the next bend in the river of time. Things are increasing in speed. There is a quickening. The future is headed at us like a semi just crossed over into our lane. Coming at us, head on! Ready or not. Quick, create something to expect and in no time at all you will see it stream past your window, in your rear view mirror, and you will call it...history.
We are no longer one country against another, one isolated tribe against another nor even one religion against another. We are now all connected and what happens in Sri Lanka or New Orleans or New York or Baghdad happens in living digital color and sound across our mind's eye 24/7 until the day we die.
The following are some personal visions of a future stripped of the artifice of story. Absorb the information and the ideas because you are about to become absorbed by them.
The time is the future, the near future between 2012 and 2020.
AMERICAN CITIES:
Since the world wide flue epidemic, the massive earthquakes and the realignment of the magnetic poles, most large American cities are shadows of their former selves. People will have learned that there is no longer any reason to group up by the million in dense urban settings. This will be been as a holdover from the 19th Century when travel was difficult and industry needed a large labor force. Things change. The physical mood of San Francisco, for example, in 2014 will be sort of like Bangkok meets Las Vegas (by the Bay). But in miniature.
Since The Changes, (which is how the massive earthquakes and the realignment of the magnetic poles will be referred to) the city will have dropped in population to the size of a large village. It will then be referred to as San Frantasia because of the extremes the city father's will have gone in order to bring the population back.
The environments first created by Disney and then expanded on in Las Vegas will have by now permeated the world, or the world that has survived the earth changes and the short lived W.W. III. Entire urban streets will now be canopied with millions of tiny lights acting as huge digital screens offering advertising as well as sim/sets of visual extravagance. And on the upper side there will be passive solar batteries so that these entire projects will be self supporting. Some cities will have extravagant themes, some neighborhoods will masquerade as cities. Even the poorest neighborhoods will have their overheads...it will be called digital graffiti . It will offer visual stimulation and it will hide what no one wants to see, the damage that will never be repaired. Examples of this can be seen currently on Fremont Street in Las Vegas.
SATELLITE PHONES:
Once the first cheap, low altitude geo-synchronous satellites come on line, world-wide communication from any spot on earth without wires will become not only possible, but inexpensive. This will change the world as we know it. With a wrist sized digital companion (PIM) one will be able to receive phone, pager, e-mail or search the internet in the middle of the ocean or on top of Mt. Everest. One companies' slogan will become "No land-lines? No towers? No problem." Suddenly the entire game will be changed, old moves on the old game board used for generations will be worse than of no use, they will be irrelevant.
PIM stands for personal information manager or as some would refer to it, their personal 'identity' informant. It will be a small wrist unit that will tell you everything you need to know about who you are, where you are, where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to be doing. With the built in GPS system you will be able to pinpoint your location within twelve inches. If you extended your arms, your position will change. And it will be solar powered. Others will be able to pinpoint your location as well.
DRUGS:
This will be a time of Technofetishists and Analgesic Dermadisks, called Derms on the street. "Derms" , or patches will be the vehicle of choice for drug ingestion. With the coming of the earth changes, all drug laws will have been rescinded. For two reasons: first because the government can no longer pay to support the hundreds of thousands of people in prisons for drug offenses and secondly, because the public will be in such a state of shock at all the recent changes that the authorities will prudently figure that people should be able to self medicate to relieve stress and cut back on the number of suicides.
Although drugs will be legal there will not be much of a problem since science will have figured how to regulate the Serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. Turns out drugs never were the problem, it was their effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain. Serotonin (down & in) and dopamine (up & out). The brain receptor chemicals that pretty much control and motivate human behavior. Dopamine is a biogenic amine, which slows transmission of nervous impulses from the CNS to the muscles, L-dopa is often used in certain nervous system disorders.
Serotonin increases the flow of nervous impulses; low Serotonin therefore often used to trigger depression. Now every drug rush is as good as the first time. People are very productive and quite happy....all considered. The great thing about the new designer drugs is that whatever your natural bent, under the influence of good drugs, you will be better. If you are a teacher and like to get up and show your stuff, under the right drugs you will be awesome, and if you are a more scientific type, under one of the new mind benders you can have the concentration of a brain surgeon and the flash-insight of an Einstein. And conversely if you are a slacker, you can turn "ease" into a four letter word; into an absolute art form and the one thing all of the "new" drugs will have in common is that once suitably high, with controller in hand, seated in front of The Wall, everyone will be aces on the Overmind (the Internet).
Drugs will be either up/down or in/out or combo designer drugs named after the finest oil colors. Symbols will be tattooed on a person's wrists to help Medi-Techs know what they are on. Symbols like an arrow for up/down, a circle with a dot in the middle for "inner drugs" and a dot with four lines radiating out for drugs that are more extroverted in design and intention. This will save many an individual from being overdosed in an ER after an emergency.
Some of the Colors (drugs)will be exquisite for producing ultra fine detail, whereas others will bring a pleasing gloss and glaze to the otherwise mundane. Some will border on sensual madness and some will produce a body odor and aura that smells like money and fame. Whatever frequency you desire, it will be available, cheap. How exactly do you wish to be today? Up? Down? In? Out? Rich? Famous? Or merely clever and talented? Or any combination. In the end the entire drug industry will be supplying paint for your cybernetic canvas so it is quite natural for 21st Century mood drugs to be named after colors of artists oil paint, for, in the end, that's exactly what they are, paint to guild your personal Lilly. They will be bigger than semi-conductors.
They will be called simply COLORS, and the places that dispense them will be called Color Bars. And the bar will usually be named after what it specializes in. Places and drugs like: Raw Umber, Rose Madder, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Violet Light, Monochrome Warm, Peach Black, Manganese Blue Phthalo, Cinnabar Green Light, Talens Green Marine...and there will be a universal drug solvent, a thinning agent. If you ever ingest too much of a specific color or merely want to lighten your load, you will simply put a couple of drops of "Liquin" on your tongue and all will be well. The favorite will seem to be a Dopamine/Serotonin mix. The perfect combination. Up/down-in/out, with extreme prejudice. Must be the feeling that God had in his slack moments immediately after creating the universe. It will be seen as s a seventh day sort of drug. It will be called Ultraglow and it will give one a feeling of incredible well being. Even those few, who turn up their nose at using Colors in theory, still will often use Ultraglow.
ONLINE ORACLES: Online oracles will become very popular using tools based on chance, speculation, probability and trend graphs. Initially there will be a Shrink in a box. These will be actual philo-therapists who will listen for hours as you down-load your life story and stress patterns and it will nod and have compassionate eyes and surprise you with its insightful comments. And the more "it" learns about you (your patterns of complaint) the more detailed and insightful its answers, (and questions) will become. It will not be uncommon for a person to develop a symbiotic relationship with their Cyber-Companion. Everyone will jokingly admit that there is really nothing to it, it is just a software device...but. In private the depth of involvement will be astonishing. Mates as well as real biological friends and pets will often take second place.
THE OVERMIND:
Somewhere within the next ten years, in the midst of the earth changes, the Internet will become The Overmind. Some say it will be because of the fears and insecurity brought about by The Changes. How will this happen?
CYBER COMPANIONS:
A Cyber Companion will be the newest version of the famous Cyber Pet, but with a full 3-D body in its own environment. It will be totally voice activated and it will have full vocal response capability and it will be trainable. It will listen, it will talk, and it will learn…it will remember. Some will refer to Cyber Companions as Daemons, which will be an insult because a daemon is just a sort of low level utility software, which may look human or lifelike but is just present to serve a simple function. A Cyber Companion will be different. You will look at it and you will see wisdom, compassion and even love. And it will not have to be human. It will be looking out, it will be looking at you. It can be an animal or a humanoid image. It can resemble a wizened old man or a flirtatious teenage girl. It will perhaps become your best friend. It will be an animated oracle rendered in full 3-D holographic realism. It will contain the entire printed wisdom of the human race and it will still be able to learn. The newest versions will have iridology software and eye tap technology which will enable them not only to positively identify their "owner", but to be able to tell their owner's mood based on the size and configuration of the pupil of the eye.
Thousands of hours will be invested training these Zone Companions. Companions will be passed down from parents to children or close friends. Celebrity companions will bring Big Money at auctions. Companions will eventually evolve to the point where they began to request a pet or another companion to "Be With", when the primary user is not available. These cyber companions will use retinal scanning to not only identify their owner, and recognize their owner's mood, some would even say the newer generation Cyber Companions will actually be able to read their owner's mind.
HOLOGRAPHIC STORAGE:
By exploiting the three dimensions of a crystal rather than the flat surface of a magnetic disk computer users will soon be able to store a terabyte of holographic data inside a crystal no larger than a sugar cube. These "cubes" will be very valuable and cubes owned by celebrities will bring vast amounts at public auction.
A hologram is a recording of an interference pattern between two beams of light, so that illumination with one beam automatically reconstructs the other, creating a "three-dimensional" image.
Like magnetic disks, holographic storage is built on digital technology. The writing process starts out in familiar fashion, as the computer processor turns data into strings of 1s and 0s. Holographic systems, however, send these bits through a spatial light modulator, which transforms electronic bits into dark or clear squares within a checkerboard matrix of light.
Passing a laser through this matrix agitates the beam, imprinting it with the binary information. The beam, with optical bits in tow, then travels through a lens and into the host crystal, where it excites electrons in an enhancing agent, called a dopant. A second "reference" beam intersects the first laser inside the crystal, setting the excited electrons into specific locations; a collection of these dispersed electrons ends up corresponding to a single bit of data.
To retrieve data, the reference beam must hit the crystal at the exact angle used to record the hologram, this reactivates the original beam. The re-created beam is then focused through a lens and sent into a detector array, which converts optical bits into their more familiar electronic relatives.
To record new holograms, the reference beam is tilted slightly to disperse the next set of electrons throughout different locations. This way, a single crystal can hold upward of a thousand different holograms, each called a "page" of information--a bit of a misnomer, since a page in holographic terms can contain up to a million bits. (hence the term "BOOK OF LIFE", made up of sense impressions stored on "pages" within a holographic crystal.)
Holographic storage portends great leaps in both data capacity and access time. Since holographic storage requires few, if any, moving parts, and because an entire page can be retrieved at once in parallel, rather than bit by bit from a rotating magnetic storage device, the potential increase in speed is enormous. Throughput rates will approach one billion bits per second, which represents more than a tenfold increase over what is possible using today's storage technology. Holography will one day deliver its million-bit pages instantaneously.
By digitally rendering an "image of a crystal" into a real crystal and by having the "image of a real page" from a real crystal, one will actually be able to store secondary data in theoretical space. Retrieval won't be quite as exact as the real thing, any more than taking a photograph of a photograph will yield as sharp an image as the original negative, but it will good enough for rather mundane things like background generation within Web Zones or recurring character interaction.
One day our information infrastructure may begin to resemble a diamond tiara encircling the globe, containing all the combined wisdom as well as the entire memory of the human race. As we once scanned pages from books in entire libraries, in the near future we will scan memories stored within human minds.
COMPUTERS:
In the soon to be future computers will be totally voice activated and cued to their owner so no one else can activate them. The good ones cannot even be deceived with a recording of their owner's voice. They seem to become attached and pick up subtle clues that are undetectable to technicians. Somehow (no one is quite sure how) they can tell the real from the Memorex. They can even read "stress" levels in their owner's voice, like an attentive pet. "What's wrong Bob? Having a difficult day?"
No longer will screens be necessary. It is called Eye-Tap technology and the image will be projected upon the retina of the eye. Most will be thought/voice activated models, meaning that the basic functions will be able to be accessed through Eye-Tap, full retinal display technology, by merely "intending"., by focused pressure (intention) put upon certain icons being projected upon the retinas of the eye. Eye Tap technology will be very popular although few will be able to handle dual retinal displays. Most people will be happier, and safer, with just one retina being bombarded with holographic visual data. The rare, gifted individual though will be able to literally move around in a world within a world. It will be an odd and disconcerting sight, watching people walking along jerking their head for no apparent reason while making impromptu hand gestures all the while talking to themselves aloud. Sort of a Cyber-Touretts thing reminiscent of the early days of hands free cell phones. And of course there will still be the Neanderthal retro enough to actually prefer one of the old fashioned laptops with an actual screen and keyboard.
There will also be advanced Lemuria Decks which will use no electrodes, just a head band, no wires, thought controlled, intention driven. In a meditative theta state, close the eyes and get full visual display. Meditation will become very popular. The calmer the mind, the more brilliant the visual display.
WEB ZONES:
It all started as photo albums then web pages and chat rooms and then role playing chat zones where the person could take on a two dimensional physical appearance and then, with the creation of holographic storage potential, full blown virtual reality zones will grow to become Memory Corridors. Eventually everyone's life will be like a radio show with a seven second time delay. Their Book of Life will became like an exaggerated echo with a three to six month time lag.
Web holozones will be where one can encounter virtual worlds with intact cultures, tribes of nomadic beings, herds of animals, exotic landscapes, involved urban chaos, something in between or a place created purely out of mind. This will be the zone of the truly gifted Imagineer. The basic law will be...nothing is as it appears to be, everything will have multiple meanings and everything will always signify yet something else, deeper. Richer levels of meaning will always be available if you would but look, give your attention and see...
Nothing, not the simplest piece of furniture, arrangement of rocks out on a plateau, clouds in the sky or flowers in a garden are what they appear to be. Things are more than symbolic metaphors, they are actual avenues which can be opened for further exploration when clicked on with focused intention. The Mind Mouse. The universe will become nothing but ICON, levels within levels of iconography, doorways, portals opening and wisdom and beauty beyond description will be revealed. And it will be free and readily available to everyone in the year 2014.
People will go from designing personal Web pages to personal virtual reality sites. WebZones. Places you can hang out. Places friends can visit, the ultimate private club or salon. Some will be free floating and move like the frequency of a cell phone, never to be in the same place twice. Others are so solid they will continue to build over generations and will be handed down in wills from fathers to sons, mothers to daughters. Like cybernetic jewelry, creations in cyberspace will be an investment. Holographic crystals will be passed on like expensive jewelry, which they are.
People will populate their WebZones with daemons for mood and background and everyone will have their favorite Avatar which they choose and animate to move around within their Zone.
Eventually people will begin to put the memories of their lives in their sites. At first they will just like grand photo-albums, but then things will get more complicated. People will began to journal their memories (cleaned up and detuned or exaggerated). From the current Blog linear format, they will be holographically fleshed out and referred to as a Book of Life and when you fall in love or become very close with someone you will share your "Book of Life". You will go visit their past (as they remember it or want it to be remembered) which is not to say that that is really how it was, but then, that is another story. And they visit yours. In the end, who cares, intention is everything.
Some people will constantly hang out in their own Memory Palaces. Some will call it Cyber-Porn. Masturbatory! With some people, taking a walk through their Book of Life will be like a walk through a very cultured and cluttered museum. With others it will be like a walk in a park. With still others you might not want to walk through their book alone, without a guide and without protection. And especially not at night, even cyber-night. It might resemble a cross between Times Square New Year's Eve 1999 and a car crash in progress with everything happening at once and yet with all the separate incidents frozen in time, to be savored later, like the left overs from a frozen dinner, or from a Jeffery Dhamer buffet.
Some people will actually hire others to design their site, so it will be dramatic or pretty or impressively chic. Beware of anyone who has someone else design their Book of Life. Some people will get so caught up they will actually begin to live in their book and get caught up somewhere between their restructured memory of a past and their fantasy imagining of a future. Their real life will simply become a maintenance site for their bio-computer, a place to sleep, fuel the body, take a dump and sweat so that the mind might remain healthy, so as to really live and move through their silicon/crystal version of consciousness, through their Book of Life. Their perfect place to be where no wind blows. The center of the cyclone. More addictive than any drug but then--no come-down.
Some will say it started with SIMM City and early the MUUD games. I say it started with the creation of the world and the sudden appearance of MAN. Something, possibly a someone, somewhere is finding our evolutionary struggle very amusing. Sort of like battle hardened veterans viewing the recent arrivals at boot camp.
Sometimes these personal sites and the Book of Life, itself would become a riddle in which the person had apparently forgotten the punch line. Some people will design their sites, like their lives, hoping against hope that life itself would conspire to give them the punch line, the big "Ah-Ha!", their reason for being. Others simply refer to these sorts of people as--"free energy".
In the beginning the Book of Life will be an exercise in memory but at some point it will pass us and becomes an exercise in futurity, threatening to dwarf and outclass anything we might do with our meager personal lives. In the end it will not only be our reconstruction of a past but at the same time it will be the carrot we hold out to ourselves, to urge us on. To distance us from death. Each one of us holds, in our private heart of hearts, our own personal Memory Palace and eventually we will all get the story straight and die trying.
We are all building a Memory Palace. Out of a person's entire life, what would they choose to remember, to carry with them forever and to constitute part of their memory palace. Probably not much. Why is that? If you haven't specifically chosen your memories like the rarest jewels that they are, then who has? And if you have empowered other entities to imprint your sacred skein with memory...why is that? Don't blame them. Why is that?
