Prenatal Visits - WebHealth

Description

Excerpted from the website description:

Prenatal visits are a must for every pregnant woman. Often the doctor has already seen the patient because of infertility treatments. A primigravida over 30 years of age, for instance, is a high risk pregnancy for developing pre eclampsia. In the past eclampsia was a common cause of maternal death and child death rate. The purpose of screening is to avoid the development of eclampsia by screening for the pre eclampsia signs and this will minimize these risks. The 1st prenatal visit is usually where the doctor determines the pregnancy EDC and a pelvic examination is done. Among other things the doctor wants to rule out a tubal pregnancy. The doctor will also warn of certain drugs or substances that need to be avoided during pregnancy. In the 1950's a common sleeping medication was thalidomide, which caused thalidomide babies with limb deformities. Alcohol has the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome and is the cause of mental retardation. Prenatal classes reinforce what the physician has said and help prepare the pregnant woman and her husband for the event of the delivery. There are infections that are detrimental to a pregnancy such as the herpes simplex virus, rubella and toxoplasmosis. Rubella can cause a small head and brain, toxoplasmosis pregnancy leads to liver and spleen disease and can cause blindness.
