Pennsylvania Power and Light is an electric company headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania, founded in 1920.

Operations

Pennsylvania Power and Light currently controls over 11,000 megawatts of electrical generating capacity in the United States, mainly in Pennsylvania and Montana. In addition, they deliver electricity to customers in the United Kingdom and Latin America.

Most of PPL's power plants burn coal, oil, and natural gas. The exception is the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, which is its largest plant and is a nuclear power plant providing 2,352 megawatts. It is located on the Susquehanna river just outside of Berwick, Pennsylvania.

History

PPL was first founded in 1920, out of a merger of eight smaller utilities in the Pennsylvania area. It confined its activities to central and northeastern Pennsylvania for several decades until the 1990s. After that, the deregulation of electrical utilities allowed it to purchase assets in other states.

The largest part of this purchase was PPL's 1998 acquirement of 13 plants from Montana Power, adding over 2,500 megawatts of capacity and making it the largest expansion in PPL's history.

The PPL building was constructed from 1926 to 1929, and is the tallest building in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The building was designed by the architect and skyscraper pioneer Harvey Corbett, who would later design New York's Rockefeller Center. It was supervised by his assistant, Wallace Harrison, who would later design Lincoln Center, LaGuardia Airport and the U.N. Headquarters Building. The building's exterior features bas reliefs by artist Alexander Archipenko. The PPL Building was named the "best example of a modern office building" by Encyclopedia Britannica in 1930, and has also featured the world's fastest elevator.
