History

Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) was founded by Captain John B. Ford and John Pitcairn in the year 1883. Regarded as the first financially successful U.S. plate glass manufacturer, PPG was located in Creighton, Pennsylvania, northeast of Pittsburgh. The headquarters was moved to Pittsburgh in 1895. Acquiring a major interest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin based Patton Paint Company in 1900, PPG expanded into coatings and resins. In 1907, the company established its first window glass factory in Mount Vernon, Ohio, with the second one in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1915. When the subsidiaries of the company yielded more than 50 percent of the annual returns in 1919, the company folded the subsidiaries into the parent company making them its divisions. With glass consumption in the construction and automobile industry reaching record levels in 1920 in the United States, the company ably met the demand by increasing its production, rising to the forefront of the industry.

As early as 1929, the company supplied more than 500 harmonious hues to 40 automakers. In 1950s, PPG introduced lead-free house paints eventually bringing out latex-based interior and exterior paints. The sales of the company in 1955 topped with $500 millions. By this time, the company had seven glass plants, three glass-fabricating plants, two specialty plants, two fiberglass plants, 17 coating and resins plants, and five chemical plants. In 1963, the company was the first to manufacture float glass. A heavy capital-investment program in the year 1960 moved the company’s sales to $1 billion by the year 1968. It was in this year that the company changed its name to PPG Industries, Inc. in view of reflecting its size, diverse range and worldwide presence. In 1985, the heirs of John Pitcairn sold their remaining stake in PPG back to the company for $530 million. With developments in diverse fields, the company is marching ahead successfully with profitable acquisitions and global expansions concentrating in the regions of Latin American and Asia-Pacific.
