THE BIRTH OF PERFORMANCE MARINE ASSOCIATES Buzz Fyhrie, owner and President of Performance Marine Associates, spent over 10 years in the Offshore Racing Circuit, as a leading race engine builder. Back in the early seventies, when Buzz worked as an Engine Designer for Pro Motor Engineering of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, the company used offshore racing competitions to test their innovations. During that time, Pro Motor engines won three APBA Offshore World Championships in some of the roughest racing conditions ever, Key West, Florida. A few of the more notable owners and drivers who have used racing equipment designed by Buzz are Red Crane; Howard Arneson and Tony Garcia of Arneson Racing; Terry Laughlin of Caliente Racing; Vinnie Rinaldi with the Rolling Thunder Race Team, and Timmy Sheenan's two time APBA World Championship Busch Racing Team. Danny Weinstein of Powerplay, Gary Stuewe of Rum Runner, a Great Lakes Silver Cup Series champion, and Mark Berman with BAM Marine joined them. As of 1985, Pro Motor shifted gears into becoming a truly dominant engine builder for several NASCAR Winston Cup, IMSA and Grand Am Teams.
Working for that many years in the high performance marine industry gave Buzz the insight to what was needed from a marine insurance company. He went searching for a company that could cover the risks, and protect not just the engine builder and manufacturer, but the boater who owned and used the expensive equipment. Finding few options available, Buzz opened Performance Marine Associates Insurance Services, Inc., a high performance, cruiser and yacht marine insurance agency headquartered in the boating capital of the world, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he has been servicing clients since early 1996.
Throughout the years, Performance Marine Associates has built an impressive client list including a number of World, National and Divisional Racing Champions. A few of PMA's more famous clients have included Jack Carmody's Spirit of Texas; Roger Rex's Rage, Joey Padovano's Pepsi and Lipton Brisk/ Prolong Super Lubricant's Team, hometown hero, Dr. Gerardo Santiago's McManus Cigarette and One Design Bat Boats, Louie Conley's Let's Play Racing Teams, Callan Marine's 55' Twin Turbine Vee, Steve Schuble's OffshoreOnly.com Cigarette, and Jim Richardson's Ettore Squeegees/Mercury Racing Super Vee.
