A special election was held on Saturday November 14, 2009 in which Plaquemines Parish residents voted in favor of a 1% sales tax increase. The increase will be dedicated to the paid firefighter system. In August of 2009, a grant was awarded which will reimburse $4.8 million dollars to the parish over five years to set up the paid firefighter system.
