Located in Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh (commonly referred to as “Pitt”) is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the United States. It is also considered as one of the country’s most distinguished and comprehensive universities, offering a wide variety of programs in the arts, sciences, and professional fields.

History

The University of Pittsburgh was founded in 1787 by Hugh Henry Brackenridge. Originally a small, private school located in a log cabin near Pittsburgh’s three rivers, it was then known as “Pittsburgh Academy.”

It was only in 1966 when it was designated as a state-related University by Pennsylvania— it received public funding and was considered a public university. Since then, it has evolved into an internationally recognized learning and research institute.

Reputation

The University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university widely known for its medical program, particularly for its organ transplant center, which performs more organ transplants than any other institution in the US. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is also the biggest employer in western Pennsylvania, with 40,000 employees and more than $5 billion in revenue.

Pitt is also a known as leader in the field of Business. The university’s Joseph M. Katz School of Business is consistently ranked by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top business school in the United Sates. Boston University ranks 20th among public universities in the country, according to the 2007 university rankings edition of the U.S. News and World Report. The same report ranks it 57th among all national universities. The Top American Research Universities ranks the Pitt as one of the Nation’s Top Public Universities, together with only six other leading public research universities.

Athletics

The University of Pittsburgh sports teams are known as the “Pitt Panthers.” They participate in the NCAA. The Pitt football team garnered a total of nine NCAA National Championships: 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, and 1979.

Student Services

The university offers various services for enriching student life, including academic help, writing center, career services, experiential learning, libraries, undergraduate research, honors college, technological services, and disability resources.

The university also has seven computer labs located throughout the campus. Any student with a valid University Computer Account can use the computers for free. Each lab maintains a mix of operating systems: Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Unix computers; as well as shared printers and scanners. Pitt also offers a non-commercial radio station with various student-run programs, plus a student-run independent newspaper, The Pitt News. There is also an informational telephone service called “Telefact,” a weekly theatre show called the “Friday Nite Improvs,” a student-run and –produced, closed-circuit television station, UPTV. Students also produce two bi-annual literary journals called “The Collision” and the “Three Rivers Review.”

Website

The official website offers comprehensive information for incoming and current students and faculty members. It discusses the University’s history, background, course offerings, and current news, among many others. It also offers links to the various Schools and Colleges of the university, as well as the various student organizations.

The website also offers registration and enrollment services. Current and incoming students can access their course schedules, grades, registration. They can also access the tuition fee portal “PittPay,” apply for graduation and diplomas, request for transcripts or certifications, read university Bulletins, and access the University Registrar’s services. The Technology Section of the University links to my.pitt.edu which allows students to check their email, sign up for financial aid, view class schedules, and organize or take care of various tasks from any remote computer with internet connection.
