A Brief History of PICA

PICA is a non-profit, Bangor (Maine) based group which has been active since 1984. Its program interests are economic justice and community building, locally and across borders. PICA's history and experience make it uniquely suited to support a community based campaign with a global focus.

PICA has durable relationships with national and international human rights and labor rights organizations. These links enable the Bangor Clean Clothes Campaign to access and cross-check credible information sources regarding sweatshop production and Clean Clothes. These connections also help broadcast the seeds of Bangor's example to other cities as our local campaign is watched nation-wide.

PICA has also initiated and nurtured a Sister City relationship between Bangor and the Salvadoran village of Carasque. Now six years old, this project continually breathes the life of personal experience into the problems that affect both our communities. From this work, PICA learns how to understand for ourselves, then frame for others, important but abstract issues in people to people terms.
