Peerless Materials Company is a manufacturer and distributor of wiping products. The company has been providing expertise on products that wipe, absorb, contain or protect since 1967. Peter Pritchard and Lou Buty, who also owns American Textile and Supply, Inc. in Richmond CA, bought the business in 2002, with the aim of developing the company into the most prominent wiping cloth company in Southern California. Their success is measured by the fact that sales have risen at a compound annual rate of 25% since.

Currently the company has expanded into other markets and products, now dealing in all types of wiping materials: rags, new and reclaimed; non-woven and paper wipers; toweling and other specialty textiles. The company has also diversified into absorbents for general industrial maintenance and oil spills, secondary containment products and storm water control products to keep oil and sediment from running into local water supplies, rivers and the ocean.

Going Green - Recycled Clothing

85% of Peerless Materials' wipers are made from post-consumer material and about 15% from pre-consumer.

Post-Consumer
Half of the post-consumer feedstock comes from local graders and thrift stores. The source of the other half are area laundries who sell their old linens, towels and sheets.

Pre-Consumer
The pre-consumer source is off-cuts from T-shirt factories (the leftover material after T-shirts are cut and made) and from textiles otherwise rejected during the manufacturing process.

Procedure

Used clothing and linen are first sorted by material type
Cutting machines then remove collars, buttons, zippers and other unusable material
The remaining material is cut into rectangular shapes
Finally it is packed by weight into cardboard boxes or large woven plastic bags for delivery

Rags and Wiping Cloths

Rags and Wiping Cloths include Recycled Wiping and Polishing Cloths, Non-Woven/Paper Wipes and Microfibers.

Recycled Wiping and Polishing Clothes include Blended Grades, Corduroy, Diapers, Flannel, Knits, Napkins/Table Linen, Sheeting, Surgical Towels, Sweatshirts/Fleece, Thermal Blankets, Towels and New Terry Towels.

Non-Woven and Paper Wipes cover Advantage Wipers, Champ Wipers, Supreme Towels, Economy Service Wipes, Adept Wiper and Cheesecloths. Non-Wovens and Paper Wipes also include Airlay, DRC, Scrim, Spunlace(Sontara), Food service Wipes, Dust cloths and Microfiber.

Sorbents

Sorbents include Universal Sorbents - MRO; Oil Sorbents; Marine Sorbents; SOCS, Pillows, Drum Covers; Rolls and Mats. Also falling within this category are Universal, Oil only and Chemical Pads and Rolls, Mats, Boom, Marine Boom, Track Mats and Loose Granular Sorbants.
