Oxford University Student Union : Home Page

Description

OUSU (pronouced "ow-zoo") is the University of Oxford's central student union, and every Oxford student is automatically a member. Its primary purpose is to provide a voice to students : OUSU exists to allow Oxford students to campaign on issues that matter to them; OUSU gets students represented to the University, to the NUS, to trade unions, to local and national government, to anyone Oxford students think should be aware of their views.

OUSU is 30 years old this year, and in that time it has picked up an array of other useful services for its members. The Student Advice Service is OUSU's welfare provider, willing to deal with any and all issues students might need advice on during their time in Oxford: it is staffed by four of OUSU's full time officers and is able to offer guidance on everything ranging from accomodation issues, to depression and anxiety, to unplanned pregnancy, to representation if your college wants to discipline you. OUSU also has the distinction of being the largest student publisher in Europe, producing not only the award-winning Oxford Student newspaper every Thursday, but also the Oxford Handbook guide to the city's highlights and lowspots; they're is also guides for Freshers', mature, graduate and international students and the highly-respected Oxford and Cambridge Careers Handbook, and many, many more. Because colleges have their own bars, OUSU has never had a central student venue, but promotes its own club nights, trying to ensure safe, accessible and enjoyable nights for all Oxford students. Each college also has a JCR and an MCR to look after the interests of its own undergarduates and graduates respectively: if your Common Room affiliates to OUSU, it will also get the benefit of officer training, assistance with rent negotiations, and other services.

Like all representative organisations, from the outside, OUSU can sometimes seem bewildering in its array of committees, campaigns, officers and functions, but most of it is actually very simple: OUSU Council is the supreme body of the student union, where all the major decisions of policy and practice are taken; it is made up of Common Room representatives and a number of delegates elected by all Oxford students. Also members of Council are the Executive ("the Exec"), who are responsible for the day-to-day running of OUSU and for ensuring that the will of Council is properly carried out. Because OUSU does so much work, Council can also create committees and campaigns to deal with certain issues, like the anti-fees campaign or rents; the chairs of these committees and campaigns are then chosen by the Exec. Council has also devolved some of its policy-making powers to Equal Opportunity campaigns: Queer Rights, Women's Campaign, International Student Committee, Disabilities Action, Mature Students and the Anti-Racism Campaign; these campaigns choose their own spokespeople and have votes in Council. There is also the Student Advice Service, for providing welfare, and a Business Team, who arrange OUSU's entz and advertising, the money from which makes up the majority of OUSU's income. The rules under which OUSU is run are laid down in its constitutional documents. If you follow the links on this page, or in the top left menu, you will find details on all these different parts of OUSU.
