Oak Ridge was a major base for the Manhattan Project, the top-secret undertaking that produced the atomic bomb during World War II. Today, a city of 28,000, Oak Ridge remains a scientific and research community known internationally for its production of and research in all forms of energy. The community education level is high with its citizens' commitment to a strong educational system.
Oak Ridge Schools spends $8,400 annually per pupil for all students, preschool through high school. This figure is more than the state's average of $4,555 and the national average of $5,894.
