Welcome to OLGA, the On-Line Guitar Archive. OLGA is a library of files that show you how to play songs on guitar. The files come from other internet guitar enthusiasts like yourself, who took the time to write down chords or tablature and send them in. Since they come from amateur contributors, the files vary greatly in quality, but they should all give you somewhere to start in trying to play your favorite tunes.
The Original and the Best
The guitar archive was begun in 1992 as an ftp site, the first internet guitar archive. What distinguishes it from later archives is that only one copy of each song is kept, so you don't have to read and play multiple files in order to get the best way to play the song. Revisions are made to the existing version.
The Ur-Source and Still-Prevailing Attitude
OLGA has its origin in the newsgroups rec.music.makers.guitar.tablature and alt.guitar.tab. Newsgroups are forums for sharing information, in the case of the guitar.tab groups, folk share information about how to play music. The problem is that files posted to newsgroups are wiped off ('aged') after three days. The obvious solution was to have an archive where the posts could be kept - the guitar archive. Even though newsgroups are less prominent today than they were before the www was invented, you should still check them out to get a taste of OLGA's origins. The spirit of co-operation and sharing that can be found in the newsgroups is carried on at OLGA. (Here's the FAQ file for the newsgroups.)
