In 1988, Advocate Ms. Gayatri Singh took the initiative and we started speaking to unions about the need of a centre for occupational health. Thirteen unions including the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) responded positively. The union of Blue Star workers offered office space and our office is housed in the union office of the Blue Star workers. Municipal Majdoor Union suggested that we take up the problem of sewerage workers. A detailed study was done and was published in 1988.
We have visited many workplaces including the site of explosion in BPCL plant in Mumbai and welding workshop of the Docks and have given detailed suggestions for improvement. Documentation of health problems and the development of a legal frame work were done at many places including with women workers in Shradhanand Mahila Ashram, who were working in the motor winding shop and at municipal garages, compactors for solid waste and an accident site of a lift maintenance work near Nagpur.
We have published booklets in Marathi about health status of sewerage workers, the field of OH issues and particular problems such as hearing loss due to noise.
