Cape Dorset: Summer 2003
The summer of 2003, we traveled to the beautiful hamlet of Cape Dorset meet our artist friends. The scenery was incredible, the fishing amazing and the beaches are full of treasures! And what is a vacation without shopping? We 'fell in love' with many carvings and had difficult time limiting our purchases for the gallery.
We were delighted by the warm welcome of the community. The day after we arrive, we were 'adopted' by a group of youngsters and after that our 'entourage' followed us every where. We were happy to note that even the children speak Inuktituit as their first language. We were welcomed in the home of (famous carver) Kiawa Ashoona and his wife (famous graphic artist) Sorosilutu. Their home is the busy hub for many extended family members and friends. In Cape Dorset, is considered rude to lock your door and most homes have visitors throughout the day.
We hiked Kingnait Mountain and took in the breathtaking scenery! Imagine the rugged terrain without a single tree or bush. There are glistening rocks of every formation and colour; possibly diamonds waiting to be discovered! The tundra was alive with Purple Mountain Saxifrage, Arctic Cotton and yellow Buttercups. The air was refreshing and cleansing.
