Seattle, Washington based Nordstrom, a publicly traded company, was founded in the year 1901 by John W. Nordstrom as a small shoe store. But over the period of a century Nordstrom has grown into a big company due to its quality, value, selection and service. Today it is one of the country’s biggest retailers in high quality apparel, shoes and accessories for both men and women. The company also sells bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, and house ware.

History

1887 – 16 year old John W. Nordstrom comes to New York City from Sweden with only 5 dollars.

1897 – One fine morning he reads about finding of gold in Klondike in Alaska. He heads to Alaska very next day. Within 2 years he earned more than $13,000 in gold mine stake and returns to Seattle. He was eager to start a business after that and he befriended a man in Alaska called Carl Wallin, who owned a shoe repair shop in downtown Seattle.

1901 – Carl Wallin and John Nordstrom decided to go into partnership and they started their first store Wallin & Nordstrom in downtown Seattle. This was just the beginning of a legend which went onto become today’s Nordstrom, Inc.

1928 – The company starts their second store. John Nordstrom retires and sells his share of the company to his sons Everett and Elmer. Carl Wallin also retired the same year and sold his share to Nordstrom sons.

1933 – Lloyd, third son of John Nordstrom joins the company

1960 – The company becomes the largest independent shoe chain in the United States; they have 8 stores in Washington and Oregon by now.

1963 – Buys Seattle based clothing store Best Apparel

1966 - Nordstrom purchases a Portland, Oregon fashion retail store and merges it with their existing Portland shoe store. For the first time, customers were greeted with a selection of both shoes and fine apparel under a new store name Nordstrom Best. They also added men’s wear and children’s clothing to their stores.

1968 – The three brothers retire and third generation of Nordstrom takes over the company led by Everett’s son Bruce, Elmer’s sons James and John, Lloyd’s son-in-law Jack McMillan and family friend Bob Bender.

1971 – The company goes public

1973 – Company’s sales cross $100 million. The company gets its new name Nordstrom, Inc.

1975 – The company spreads its wings into Alaska. Nordstrom Rack opens in Seattle, Washington.

1978 – The company enters California Market

1988 – Enters East Coast with the opening of a new store in Virginia.

Today – The Company has grown from a shoe store to a countrywide fashion specialty chain with finest selection of apparel, shoes and accessories for all age ranges. Today, Nordstrom is a $11 billion company and is ever growing.
