Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. Acne lesions appear most often on the face but can develop on the back, chest, shoulders and neck.
Whiteheads are small, hard, painless white blemishes that commonly occur in clusters on the cheeks, nose and chin. Blackheads are composed mainly of dried body oils and shed dead skin cells. Pimples usually contain pus. In some cases deeper, boil-like lesions such as nodules (solid mass of tissue) or cysts are present.
Many people believe acne is the result of poor hygiene or poor eating habits. However, it is now know that acne is most closely linked to hormonal influences. While acne can occur at any age, it is most common during adolescence. At the onset of sexual maturity, both males and females secrete increased amounts of hormones called androgen hormones, which over stimulate and enlarge the sebaceous glands (oil glands). Severe acne is much more common in teenage boys probably because boys produce more androgens.
