> FRI originated in 1968 with the founding of the Financial Research Institute within McGill University. The Institute, sponsored by a number of financial institutions, including leading banks, major investment firms, and insurance companies, was a co-operative, whose main purpose was to provide high quality investment databases and investment management software. In 1977, FRI was spun off from the Financial Research Institute as a limited corporation. FRI's service bureau revenues grew substantially in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
