NCH Healthcare System in Naples Florida

About Us

Today, the NCH Healthcare System (NCH) represents one of the most progressive approaches to healthcare in the country – an alliance of 630 physicians, and two hospitals with 681 beds. Rarely do healthcare systems embrace such a diversity of care options – and NCH has received numerous awards from multiple independent healthcare quality ratings organizations. NCH is the largest private employer in the area with 3,700 colleagues, an annual budget expense of approximately 500 million and a payroll with benefits of approximately $200 million. Statistically, NCH has 32,549 admissions; 82,818 ER visits; 3,400 babies born; 420 open heart surgeries; 11,484 other surgeries; 7,524 Wellness members; 1,228 volunteers and countless benefactors.

NCH Downtown Naples Hospital Campus

Two of the newest features on this campus are the Briggs Health Pavilion and the Garden of Hope and Courage. The Briggs Health Pavilion gives NCH a signature building on the corner of Fourth Avenue North and U.S. 41. This building contains a state of the art Whitaker Wellness Center, utilizing some of the most sophisticated exercise equipment available today, along with cardiac rehabilitation, physical/occupational/speech rehabilitation and the von Arx Diabetes and Nutrition Center.

The Garden of Hope and Courage significantly enhances the property southeast of the hospital. Once affectionately referred to as the "duck pond", the Garden is a valued addition for patient, families, staff and others to relax and meditate in a comforting, healing atmosphere.

NCH North Naples Hospital Campus

Nothing will be more evident of improving services to our customers than the Jay & Patty Baker Patient Care Tower and the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging on the NCH North Naples Hospital campus. The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging is an acute care unit for frail elderly that incorporates care specialized for this high risk population. The multidisciplinary model of inpatient care is geared to avoid complications and return the elderly patients to their level of baseline function prior to hospitalization through attention to individualized care, family involvement, lower staffing ratios, care protocols, and the unit's specialized physical design.

The Baker Tower was constructed to depict a smooth "spa-like" feel, with earth tone colors and furnishings. The curved architecture is meant to personify a positive, healthy and warm image. Patients and visitors will be greeted by a light-filled entry. Large floor to ceiling windows have been utilized in patient rooms and throughout the hospital to take advantage of the light and the beauty of our surroundings.

In addition to the lobby, and admit/discharge area, the first floor consists of the chapel, gift shop, café, laboratory and pharmacy with a robot. The second floor accommodates sixteen Intensive Care and nineteen telemetry medical/surgical beds. The third floor is split into two patient care areas; one consists of twenty five pediatric beds including four rooms with high acuity capability such as telemetry and ventilator care. The remaining nineteen beds on the third floor are dedicated for orthopedic/neurological/surgical patients. The fourth floor is a general 45 bed medical/surgical unit with 17 rooms dedicated to women's services.

Pediatric Services: Pediatric care has made great strides with the new Robert and Mariann MacDonald SeaCAREium, a spectacular 24-bed pediatric unit. NCH employs full-time intensivists whose skill and expertise provide healing and comfort and enable NCH to keep more kids here and send less away to out-of-town facilities. The NCH Birth Place has recently added 24/7 in house coverage for neonatal intensive care so that doctors are there for fragile newborns at a moment's notice. During the past year, we successfully recruited a pediatric orthopaedic/spine surgeon, a pediatric critical care physician and a pediatric cardiologist.

Services for Women: Beginning in Fall 2009, NCH will be launching a comprehensive Women's Center of Excellence focusing on Wellness, Education, Cardiology, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Orthopaedics and Oncology.

Bonita Market: NCH is a partner in the Bonita Community Health Center, a joint venture with the Lee Memorial Health System in the Bonita Springs/Estero area. NCH offers an outpatient rehabilitation center, and the second Community Blood Center donor location is in the Bonita/Estero area as well. Additionally, a third NCH Wound Healing Center has opened at the Bonita Community Health Center.

Surgical Services: The NCH Healthcare System provides orthopedic services on both the Downtown Naples Hospital campus and the North Naples Hospital campus. NCH is known for being one the busiest total joint replacement hospitals in the state and in the country. A number of quality initiatives are underway including obtaining and maintaining a 5-star rating from HealthGrades, a leading healthcare quality ratings organization. Leadership is also focused on evaluating the feasibility of obtaining a Joint Commission Center of Excellence designation for Joint Replacements, a designation held by fewer than half a dozen hospitals nationwide. Renovation to the Orthopedic floor (5 North) on the Downtown Naples Hospital campus is underway. Construction began in June 2009 and is expected to be complete by October 2009.

Behavioral Services: The Voluntary Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at NCH offers a safe comprehensive evaluation for individuals with acute psychiatric illness who would benefit from a brief hospitalization. The multidisciplinary team consists of board certified psychiatrists, advanced practice nurses, medical physicians, professional nursing staff, licensed clinical social workers, occupational therapists and Arts in Healing volunteers who work with each patient, their family and or natural support people to develop treatment plans tailored to the patients specific needs. Best practice, biological and psychosocial treatment interventions are utilized to stabilize a patient's condition and to promote his or her well being.

The patient, in consultation with the treatment team, determines whom they want involved in the treatment process to assure that stabilization and healing continue after the patient has left the unit to pursue aftercare.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service provides timely, efficient, and high quality psychiatric consultation services to the medical, surgical, pediatric and obstetrical inpatient units at NCH Healthcare System. Our board certified psychiatrists and advanced practice nurses are available to evaluate and assist with the management of psychiatric disorders occurring in medically ill inpatients throughout NCH.

Cancer Programs: NCH Cancer Services have partnered with Florida Cancer Specialists, Naples Medical Center Oncologists, and 21st Century Oncology to offer comprehensive cancer services on the Downtown Naples Hospital campus.

Cardiac Services: The Shick Heart Center was one of the first cardiac programs in the U.S. to immediately use angioplasty to unblock arteries during a heart attack instead of waiting for clot busting drugs to work. This program, which helped NCH attain national recognition, is called Code-Save-A-Heart. NCH is ranked among the top hospitals in the nation for Cardiac Care. New research from the American Medical Association indicates this advanced technique, when performed in high volume centers like NCH, clearly improves outcomes. In addition to on and off pump open-heart procedures, our cardiovascular surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures which contribute to our ranking among the best in the Nation.

Diabetes Center: The von Arx Diabetes Center of Excellence & Nutrition Health Center which opened in early 2006 is a cornerstone for diabetes education, prevention and treatment in Southwest Florida.

Hospitalist Program: General medicine physician call is voluntary. Any primary care physician who wishes to participate in emergency room call may do so, and both hospital campuses will have 24/7 coverage by hospitalists who will take all remaining unassigned call. Separate groups will cover each hospital; however, each group will have the freedom to cover for physicians at either campus. Physicians can choose to use or not use either group or make other arrangements.

Automate Medical Staff Processes: The quest for a digital environment which adds value in terms of safety and efficiency continues. Most physicians on staff are facile with Power Chart, our electronic medical record. This is evident by the over 300 physicians who have access from their offices and homes through the Internet. A major addition to the electronic medical record has been the introduction of computer physician order entry (CPOE). This is available in all areas of the hospital and includes the capability to electronically generate prescriptions and discharge instructions at discharge. CPOE has been well received by many of the physicians with full adoption by both the Anesthesiologists and the Emergency Department Physicians. Efforts continue towards a goal of full adoption house wide. Once that goal is achieved, efforts will be directed toward on-line physician documentation.

Telemetry Beds: NCH has a total of 235 telemetry beds in the System and we were able to accommodate the seasonal needs of our patients and eliminate prolonged waits in the ER for patients who require monitoring. The NCH North Naples Hospital campus is designed so that every bed can accommodate a telemetry patient and provides wireless coverage throughout the facility, thereby eliminating the need for portable monitoring of patients to and from tests and procedures.

Workforce Housing Needs: NCH has continued to provide first-time homeowners with forgivable loans, which have helped over 200 employees, achieve the American dream of home ownership.

Process Automation: We upgraded our Laboratory Information System in the spring of 2009 with a product which provides advanced management information such as turnaround time and one which requires less manual intervention for The MedMined System, which provides surveillance and trending for infectious disease, was upgraded in January 2009. This system receives an automated interface from the laboratory system and provides alerts to NCH regarding nosocomial infections and opportunities for intervention.

The Bed Board system, which links Housekeeping, Nursing and Admitting, was upgraded in June 2009 with enhanced features to foster better communications.

We enhanced our remote access offering for physicians to include radiology images via the PACs system (provides digital images instead of traditional film). The majority of the orthopedic and neurosurgeons are currently using this feature to expedite care for patients.

Quality: This past year, the Board of Trustees established a Quality Committee signifying our organizational commitment to developing a system wide culture of quality. Recently, we joined the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a group of like-minded healthcare providers with the goal to improve safety, efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of care.
