Title

My Sister's Place

Description

Since 1987, People In Transition "My Sister's Place" has provided emergency shelter services to abused women and their children in South Simcoe County. (from Herald ad) We serve the communities of Adjala/Tosorontio, Bradford/West Gwillimbury, Essa, Innisfil and New Tecumseth.

Women living in abusive situations in the rural and farm communities in South Simcoe face many barriers to leaving including: isolation from community supports, lack of transportation, and high rents. These women have often experienced physical, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse within their intimate relationships. Their children may have experienced trauma from the domestic violence they have witnessed in the home.

"My Sister's Place" provides safe refuge to abused women and their children who are fleeing abusive relationships. This past year, My Sister's Place served over 1,534 women and their children in both our residential and non-residential services. In the shelter, staff offers crisis counselling, emergency transportation support, referrals to other community services, and legal and housing support to abused women and children residents. Our Outreach workers travel South Simcoe communities to provide these same confidential services to abused woman and children who chose to remain on their farms and within their communities.
