Description
Thoughts on conducting a Multi-Sector Review and the preparation of a development plan for Arab East Jerusalem have been espoused by many individuals, groups, and organizations in the past five years. But none other than the late Faisal Husseini had the vision of realizing the importance of such a review. By first preparing a comprehensive and integrative plan for the city and by secondly establishing a Jerusalem Fund for Community Development to coordinate the funding of the plan, Faisal realized that this was part of the way forward to improve the living conditions of Palestinians in Arab East Jerusalem and developing its services, economy and heritage.
Since 1997, the Arab Studies Society has been working with the European Union to guarantee funding for such a study. The European commission supported a project programming mission carried out in1997. It resulted in Oct 1997 in the submission of a concept paper on the Multi-Sector Review and Development Plan of East Jerusalem. In 2000, an agreement was signed with the EU to fund the project which was to be implemented during 2001/2002.
Palestinian experts have been recruited to work along with European consultants to collect relevant information, conduct the review and prepare a development plan.
