History

Morgan Stanley was instituted on September 5, 1935 in New York. The founders were Henry S. Morgan, and Harold Stanley of J. P. Morgan & Co. The key people of Drexel & Co. too joined them in this new endeavor. Within one year of its establishment, the firm achieved 24% of market share among public offerings. Morgan Stanley created the first viable computer model for financial analysis in 1964. By the year 1971, the firm went in for Mergers and Acquisition business along with sales and trading. However, it was only in 1971, that the company was publicly listed. Morgan Stanley acquired Van Kampen American Capital, a reputed mutual fund company in 1996. Following this, the company merged with Dean Witter, and Discover & Co. in 1997. For a brief period after this, the company was called Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Discover & Co. Then the name was changed to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. In late 2001, the company came to be called as Morgan Stanley to preserve brand recognition and marketing. After reporting the fourth quarter earnings in December 2006, Morgan Stanley carried out the spin off of its Discover Card unit.
