Part of it stems from a desire to not have to make small talk with the person sitting next to me, but I've also found that it brightens my day considerably if I can start off my morning with music that I like. However, for a long time it was pretty cumbersome, since I had to bring my personal CD player everywhere, and if I wanted to listen to more than one disk I needed to drag along part of my CD collection as well. Switching discs was also a hassle, especially if the bus was crowded and I had to stand. Jostling with the rest of the passengers every time we hit a pothole made the usually simple process of changing CDs a significant task.
