Montgomeryshire (electorate: 44,000) is a largely rural constituency in Mid Wales. Its main centres of population are Newtown, Welshpool and Llanidloes along the Severn Valley in the East, and Machynlleth in the West. The old county of Montgomeryshire/Sir Drefaldwyn is now the northern part of the unitary authority of Powys.

In 1999 Mick Bates was elected as the area's first representative to the new National Assembly for Wales, and re-elected in 2003.
