- Modern Rock Classics was launched April 1, 2005 by John Russell, AKA "the Chubby Parrot". His desire for a radio station that played more Classic Rock And Alternative Rock from the 80's and 90's went unanswered by the terrestrial stations in the market in which he lived, so he started ripping his CDs from years of collecting and radio work into his laptop computer. This proved too klunky to actually be able to listen and work, so he sought out a solution, which was Live365.com. Modern Rock Classics was initially just Russell's way of listening to the music he liked at work, but people soon discovered MRC and the station's listenership exploded. Russell added liners and sweepers in his own voice and attitude to give MRC the attitude that listeners came to love. In the summer of 2006, Modern Rock Classics rose to be the 4th most listened to active rock stream worldwide, as reported by RadioWave Monitor. The Copyright Royalty Board Decision to go to a per pay royalty rate versus a percentage of revenue rate for all internet webcasters threatens to close Modern Rock Classics in Mid June 2007. It's fate rest's in the hands of the U. S. Congress, who have proposed "The Internet Equality Act" HR2060 in the House and S. 1353 in the Senate.
