Description

Homestead Books is located in northern Iowa. There fiercely independent forefathers of notable aerospace pioneers had tremendous faith and a remarkable ability to endure extended hardship. Homestead Books is breaking new ground on the topic of Mission 51-L and the space shuttle Challenger explosion. (In the linked photo, red and yellow arrows point to disturbing new black smoke. In a rarely-seen view from NASA-impounded UPI film, that smoke is visible against the nearly luminous, inboard background of the hydrogen tank's aft dome. Such smoke conflicts with the official account of outboard-only "O-ring puffs." The San Francisco Chronicle did not publish this press photo until February 14, 1986. It is shown here at Challenger Lift-Off .)

The early settlers of this area (typified in the above photo) lived by a code that embodied common decency, a sense of fair play, and a demand for justice. Their space-pioneering descendants lived by that same code, as they steadily and resourcefully worked to make John F. Kennedy's vision a stunning reality.

President Reagan reacted harshly to the peaceful use of men in space. He attempted to militarize NASA. The Challenger explosion soon shocked the nation, followed by a well-planned cover-up (see, for example, Plot). The dream of further space exploration almost died during the nearly three years when no shuttles flew. Below, the boosters exit the fireball -- after crossing.
