Her latest novel, Closing the Helix'" is based on the known life and adventures of Pytheas of Massalia. Pytheas wrote two books about which there are now only fragments. He travelled - and rounded Britain, recorded his observations and explored beyond to 'Thule." No one is ceratin where that was. Making many celestial measurements along the way, he observed the winter and summer solstices. Many conmsider that he made the journey to Iceland. The venerable Bede mentions Thule - and he surely knew of Norway, so perhaps he did. Pytheas also writes about amber and the Baltic sea. By which route he returned to Massalia is unknown. Margarett Mirley's novel gives him reason for the journey and decides a possible route for him and his companions whose own stories evolve about his. The tin trade, observations of tidal action at Gades(Cadiz) and parallel reflection on Alexander's more violent exploration and eastern conquests make for an interesting comparison.
