Description

Excerpted from the website:

The midge biting season in Ireland runs from late April into September or even October in some years and locations. During this period there are several generations of midge produced. The Irish flying biting midge lives for between 2 days and 2 weeks depending on weather conditions. During this time the female can lay up to 170 eggs In as much as 3 batches. In a normal year there are 2 to 3 generations of midges born during the season. The first batch of midges emerges at the start of the season from their over-wintering in the soil. These quickly bite, mate and lay their eggs. These eggs will then rapidly develop through the full midge-cycle to emerge as adults towards the end of July. These second generation midges then repeat the bite, mate and lay cycle. In some particularly favourable years (for midges) they may fully mature and emerge in early September laying a third generation which does the over-wintering.
