Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive form of cancer that is caused by asbestos and certain other carcinogens. It is incredibly difficult to diagnose because of its lengthy latency period between exposure to the carcinogen and presentation of symptoms. This latency period can often last as long as 30 to 50 years. Because of this, we are still diagnosing mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos in the 1960s and 1970s. Asbestos is a fibrous substance that, when broken down, is small enough to be inhaled without much notice. For decades, the substance was used in construction and other projects because of its flame retardant nature.
