While much of our work happens at the business level, we have several cross-business groups to help us leverage best practices, knowledge, and technologies across the company. They include:

Medtronic International leads our operations, sales, and distribution outside the United States.

Quality and Operations relentlessly drives continuous process improvement throughout the company to support a key tenet of our Mission: to strive without reserve for the greatest possible reliability and quality in our products. This group also provides cost-effective shared business services, such as IT, human resources, and finance.

Strategy and Innovation coordinates research and development capabilities across the entire company, especially as we combine multiple technologies to improve our therapies. This group also evaluates growth opportunities to strategically allocate our investment dollars.

Healthcare Policy and Regulatory provides a strategic approach to policy issues that affect the entire medical technology industry. As a global leader, we work with government agencies and peer groups worldwide on issues such as regulatory approvals, reimbursement, and cost-benefit analysis.

History

Founded way back in 1949 by Earl E. Bakken and the late Palmer J. Hermundslie, today Medtronic is the world's leading medical technology company, providing lifelong solutions for people. Medtronic was headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Medtronic developed the first ever wearable external cardiac pacemaker in 1957 and then in 1960 made a reliable long term implantable pacing system, and made a mark in the pacing technology. Since then their area basically includes providing therapeutic, diagnostic, and monitoring systems for cardiovascular, neurological, diabetes, spinal, and ear, nose and throat markets.

Medtronic's area of service varies in more than 120 countries. Regional Headquarters include Switzerland and Japan employing more than 37,000 people worldwide. Medtronic has contributed more than $300 million in Medtronic Foundation grants, Medtronic cash contributions and medical device donations to improve the health of people and communities.

Employment

Our medical technologies help make it possible for millions of people to resume everyday activities, return to work, and live better, longer. We're able to do this with the help of some very special people around the world: 38,000 dedicated employees who share a passionate purpose to improve lives, thousands of medical professionals who share their insights and ideas, and hundreds of advocacy associations that help us share information so people with debilitating diseases know relief is possible.
