Description

I have never been part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) or, otherwise known as, the Medieval Club. But I have had a strong affinity with people who are. My first introduction to home-brewing was at a small dinner party at an SCAer’s house when I was in second-year at UVic. Blueberry wine was served with dinner. And it was gorgeous. I have heard the description used for a taste of wine being like “cascading gobs of berries” and this experience was a near kin to that. Naturally I asked everyone for vinting supplies for Christmas, never received them, and then slowly forgot about it. In third year university, I met an amazing man and mead-maker (another SCAer) while living in Victoria, BC. He introduced me to his melomels and together we made strawberry mead. It was that mead mojo that rekindled the lust, and I became a melomel girl. I bought my own equipment this time and for nine years now, brews have been bubbling and troubling in numerous basements and kitchen nooks.

This site is the offspring of an empassioned discussion on a ferry to Galiano Island at Christmas time with a great guy and Web-master who kindly lent an ear to yet another song of praise for the craft of mead. The idea came together spontaneously, excitedly, and mono-syllabically "Can we do it?", "Yes!", "Should we do it?", "Of Course!", "How much?", "For you? Not too much..."

As for getting out into the community, I’ve hosted some successful mead-tastings and have been invited to conduct another at Golden Mile Winery during their Medieval-themed dinner party during October wine fest in the Okanagan. I won 3rd place in the “Other Fruit Melomel” category at Meadllenium 7 in Florida this year for my Quince melomel and am keen to try my luck next year!
