Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute

Description

Job Opening, Summer 2006: Policy Analyst Internship (unpaid)

The Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute (the Institute) is a nonpartisan research organization that provides timely, accurate, and accessible analysis of budget and tax issues in the state of Maryland. In addition to general budget and tax research and analysis, the Institute examines issues affecting vulnerable populations and the community programs that serve them. The Institute is a project of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, which is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Institute seeks an intern for summer 2006 to participate in the Institute’s analysis of programs for low-income Marylanders. The intern will assist in the preparation of an Institute report on wealth and poverty in Maryland, including federal and state services and benefits for people with low incomes. This report will examine several or all of the following topics: incomes, poverty rates, health insurance access, welfare, and wages. The report will include comparisons of Maryland to other states and comparisons among localities within Maryland.

The intern also will contribute to the Institute’s examination of how Maryland implements requirements of certain federal programs for low-income families. For example, the intern will help examine new work participation requirements in the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, with particular attention given to the state of Maryland’s response.
