Description
Margaret Hunter of Williamsburg, Virginia, is thought to be the first woman to become a clothing store propietor in America. Miss Hunter came to America from London, England in the late 1760's with experience in the clothing business. The Virginia Gazette, October 1767, remarked about Miss Hunter stating, "having... just arrived from London, who understands the millinery business".
Proud was Margaret Hunter of her clothing store. She advertised her business with a gold framed oval portrait of herself pictured in a wide brimmed, shallow crowned bergere hat. This portrait was mounted on the gable of the shop
noting to all that passed that she was proud to serve their needs with her fashions. Miss Margaret Hunter did an exceptional job serving her clients with fine millenaries and in fact continued her thriving business until her death in the late 1780's.
