Description
The night I was born, a December snowstorm hit the town so hard it ripped the cross off the top of the hospital. Back in the early '50s, in Iowa, they didn't have the modern road-clearing equipment, and the roads were still a quagmire a few days later when it was time to bring Mom and me home.
"I had a newer car," my Dad said, "but my Ford Model A was the only thing that would make it through the knee-deep ruts. It rode so high."
Thus began my lifelong love affair with old cars. And Dad hung onto his cars forever. I can remember the '29 Chevy we rode in every Sunday out to the family cabin on the Wapsipinnicon River. Many happy times in that big, old, curvy thing!
