MSA Consulting, Inc. was founded in Palm Springs, California, in 1976 by civil engineers Robert Mainiero and Robert Smith. A full-service planning and engineering company, it is the largest such firm in the Coachella Valley.
Known as Mainiero, Smith and Associates, Inc. for 30 years, the name was shortened to MSA Consulting, Inc. in 2004 to better reflect the expanded services, renewed focus and relocation of the company to Rancho Mirage.
The firm’s initial success came from representing small public agencies and municipalities on water and sewer projects. Designing infrastructure projects — including roads, flood control and water and sewer facilities — remain a large part of its ongoing work. As the Coachella Valley grew, large scale residential, commercial and resort projects became significant sectors of the firm’s business profile.
