MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion

Description

Google announced today an update to their popular Google Earth software as well as the release of their 3D software SketchUp which integrates with Google Earth. Google Earth is now a Universal Binary, but SketchUp (Free) is not. Google Maps was also updated to finally include Geocoding and a new Google Maps Enterprise, "ffering a fee-based service and support for businesses that want to embed a Google Maps experience in their websites or internal applications."

petard writes "Dave Winer videotaped a conversation with John Dvorak where he explained his techniques for driving traffic to his stories by deliberately angering Mac users. He's posted a torrent of the video since the original link has gone dead." Not really groundbreaking news, but everyone knows that controversial discussions drive traffic as more and more people debate and respond. It may, though, explain some of his crazy, out-there, ideas.

proclus writes "Rob Braun and I (GNU-Darwin) have gotten ourselves involved in public discussions with several Apple employees, who are involved with Apple Core development regarding the free and open source software status of the kernel and various drivers, which are required in order for the system to boot. There is information is foundational to Mac OS X and Darwin OS, the kernel, ppc, x86, APIC, Ethernet, and Cryptography to boot. Take your pick. It is truly a bazaar. Here is a link to the forum." What Proclus means to say is that he was a complete ass and sent this to every list that Apple runs, and then got bitched at by hundreds of people who don't want to deal with his history of silly antics on mailing lists completely unrelated to the subject at hand. That said, the future openness of Darwin is interesting, and does deserve to be discussed by more rational people, which is why I'm opening it up here on MacSlash.
