Careers in Innovation

History

The first Lowe's was started as a single neighborhood hardware store located in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1946. The chain has expanded steadily from that time, after merging with Eagle Hardware stores. Lowe's has grown to become the second-largest home improvement retailer, after Home Depot.

Lowe's focus is on a softer, friendlier atmosphere than Home Depot, with more focus on the individual home builder than the professional contractor. They have also kept a focus on a hierarchical structure of organization. Lowe's is organized geographically into divisions such as Southeast, West, Northeast, then regions usually designated with a two-digit number, then areas, districts and finally the individual store.

Future Plans

Lowe's is targeting both Canada and Mexico as the next locations to branch to. They plan to open up to ten stores in Canada by 2008, and open up three to five new stores in Mexico by 2010.
