For me, collecting insects can be a fun educational activity for children. It is an interesting hobby and can easily help children get close to nature. Every once in a while, you can get children to collect insects in the school playgrounds, house backyard, parks, nature reserves, etc. Children who have the opportunity to get close to nature can learn about how to appreciate nature and its offerings as they get close to understanding how insects live, by observing their behavior and even as we try to mimic and relate to their uniqueness.
I would encourage students and children to see insect collecting as an activity for helping to create a sustainable future. Insect collections can be made into art and exhibitions - where the public can be made aware of such beauty and miracles we have in nature. When all our generations can see how nature has contributed to us, then only we have succeeded in preserving and conserving our natural resources, whether they are precious minerals, plants or animals. It all begins from young, and it begins as a hobby. So if we can only allow this rare hobby of insect collecting to be absorbed by youngsters in today's over-modernised world, where the children only play indoors and not outdoors anymore, this might be an opportunity to renew our current generation's lost relationship with nature.
