Title

Casa de la Guitarra Española. Spanish Guitars.

Description

Its origins are not very clear, a lot of instruments of the same kind were used in the antiquity, representations in asirios and hititas bas-reliefs, which go baek to 1000 years before our era, have been discovered. However the name of guitar would come from instruments without handle (kettarah) and this has led to suppose that the guitar is derived from the Greek and Roman zithers , to which a handle would have been joined at the beginning of our era.

However it is , from the eleventh or twelfth century on there are two kinds of "guitarres" or "guiternes", the Moorish one with oval shape related to the mandora(XIVth-XVIIIth centuries) and to the family of lutes, as well as to the mandolina the latin (latin guitars) with a plain bottom, like the present guitar with sides and outlines which join the cover with the bottom. The first one will go in favour of oriental origin(a kind of asirio lute, through Persia and Arabia, would have conquered Spain under Arab rule) the second, in favour of Greek-Latin origin. One and the other kind are represented in the miniatures of "Cantigas de Sta. Maria de Alfonso X el Sabio" (1270). In the XIVth century, Macheau y Eustache Deschamps name the "guitena" without specifying the kind, but it seems that it´s the latin guitar since its Moorish sister had derived to "mandora" .

In the XVIth century it appears a very rich literature whose great production takes place in Spain. In this era it appears a five string guitar whose contribution is due to the Andalusian poet and musician Vicente Martinez Espiel, who was born in Ronda ( Málaga ) in 1550.
