KNAU is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a non-commercial, educational radio station. KNAU's licensee is the Arizona Board of Regents acting for and on behalf of Northern Arizona University, a nine person board appointed by the Governor of Arizona. Within NAU, KNAU is part of the Office of the President reporting to Executive Vice President M.J. McMahon.

KAWC 88.9 FM/1320 AM in Yuma joined the Arizona Public Radio network in 2006 through a management agreement with Arizona Western College.

Staffing: 12 full-time staff, 2 part-time staff, and numerous student interns. Approximately 200 volunteers participate in station pledge drives. KNAU management includes: General Manager John Stark, Program Director Geoff Norcross, Development Director Alice Ferris, Operations Manager Dave Riek, and Finance Director Annie Kuchler.
