Description
The road From Durban to Pietermaritzburg climbs 550 metres above sea level in the first 27 kilometres out of Durban. At this point the hills are covered with trees, there are gardens full of flowers, and in the distance the Indian Ocean, blue and hazy, surges restlessly against the shores of Africa. A deep ravine cuts through the hills with a stream known as the Molweni (‘stream of high cliffs’) rushing down through rapids, cascades and a waterfall. This ravine is the 447-hectare Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. The town of Kloof (‘ravine’) surrounds the reserve. Green, park-like and cool, it is one of the most attractive residential areas in the hills above Durban. A tranquil environment, away from the oppressive humidity of the coastal area yet still within easy commuting distance of the centre of Durban.
Rainfall figures have been kept in Kloof since 1935 and the average yearly rainfall in this period has been recorded as 1 074,5 millimetres. The bulk of the rain fails in the summer months from October to March. Summer temperatures (from 18' to 29' C) and winter temperatures (from 12' to 20' C) are tempered by the fact that Kloof lies approximately 550 metres above sea level. Being in a subtropical region, Kloof rarely experiences frost. Prevailing winds during summer are north-east to south-east and, during winter, north-east to south-west. During spring the early mornings and evenings are occasionally misty.
Fertile soil and the temperate climate have made Kloof famous for its many beautiful gardens, particularly attractive in early spring when azaleas are in full bloom. Spacious lawns, flowering shrubs and shady trees are typical, and some properties are fortunate to have seasonal or perennial streams to add to their appeal. With an adequate summer rainfall, good soil, mild winters and the absence of strong winds, the gardener can enjoy ideal conditions for the growing of most plants. Avocado pears, bananas, guavas, mangoes, pawpaws and litchis are very successfully grown in this area. Apart from azaleas, hydrangeas, brunsfelsia, lasiandra and abelia grow in profusion in most Kloof gardens and, when these shrubs blossom, they present a blaze of colour.
