Title
kemri-wellcome trust collaborative research programme
Description
The Wellcome Trust has had a long-standing presence in Kenya, dating back to the establishment of the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratories by Henry Foy at the Kenyatta Hospital in Nairobi in 1949.
A wide variety of research has been carried out at the Nairobi site in the subsequent 50 years, with malaria becoming a major focus in the mid-1980s. KEMRI was established in 1979, and has a number of research centres investigating diseases of particular importance in Kenya.
The origins of the current Programme lie in the work of Dr Bill Watkins, who was based in Kenya from the 1970s until his return to the UK in 1999.
